Preparing for AQA GCSE French can feel overwhelming.
Below you’ll find the official AQA GCSE French papers for 2025 that students need at this stage, clearly organised by paper and tier.
Paper 1: Listening – Foundation Tier (2025)
The Foundation Listening paper tests:
Understanding of clear, familiar spoken French
Key vocabulary across everyday GCSE themes
Ability to select and write accurate short answers in English
This paper is ideal for students targeting grades 1–5 and for building confidence with AQA’s listening question styles.

Paper 1: Listening – Higher Tier (2025)
The Higher Listening paper requires:
More complex listening comprehension
Understanding opinions, justifications, and unfamiliar language
Greater precision under exam conditions
This paper is suitable for students aiming for grades 4–9.

Paper 2: Speaking – Foundation and Higher (2025)
Unlike the other components, Paper 2: Speaking is shared by both Foundation and Higher tiers.
All students complete:
A Role-play
A Photo card task
A General Conversation based on GCSE themes
The difference between Foundation and Higher lies in:
Time allowed
Level of response expected
Examiner marking criteria — not in a different paper title
This is why the official paper is labelled Foundation and Higher.
