Six Examiner Tips for Edexcel IAL German Students
1. Support Your Ideas with Genuine Research
Do not rely only on personal experiences or general opinions when discussing your General Topic Area. Research your chosen topic carefully and prepare relevant facts, statistics and examples. For Unit 3 Section A, you must refer clearly to at least two named, written German-language sources. Avoid vague statements such as „Studien zeigen …“; identify the newspaper, article, magazine or author wherever possible.
2. Speak Spontaneously Instead of Reciting Memorised Answers
The speaking examination should sound like a natural discussion, not a rehearsed speech. Learn useful vocabulary and arguments, but do not memorise complete paragraphs. Practise responding to unexpected questions and extending answers with reasons, examples and comparisons. Be prepared for follow-up questions such as „Wieso?“, „Wie meinen Sie das?“ and „Können Sie ein Beispiel dafür geben?“
3. Answer Every Part of the Stimulus Question Precisely
In Unit 1 Section A, read the stimulus card carefully and follow the requirements of each question. For Question 1, identify and rephrase all three required points from the first paragraph. For Question 2, base your answer on the second paragraph and manipulate the language rather than copying it unchanged. In Questions 3 and 4, develop your ideas using explanations, consequences and relevant examples.
4. Link A2 Topics Directly to the German-Speaking World
When discussing technology, society or ethics in Unit 3, do not give a completely global or general answer. Anchor your argument in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. Use specific examples involving German-speaking institutions, policies, statistics or social debates. Phrases such as „In Deutschland …“, „In Österreich …“ and „In der Schweiz …“can help make this connection explicit.
5. Rephrase Comprehension Answers Clearly and Precisely
Avoid copying whole sentences from a reading or listening passage. Select only the information needed and express it concisely, adjusting pronouns, verb forms, tenses and word order where necessary. Do not use an ambiguous pronoun such as sie when the examiner may not know who or what it refers to. Repeat the relevant noun or name so that your answer is completely clear.
6. Analyse Set Works Instead of Retelling Their Plots
In literature, film and research-based essays, focus on the exact question rather than narrating what happens. Begin with a clear argument, organise your response into analytical paragraphs and finish with a reasoned conclusion. Support each point with precise evidence, such as quotations, scenes, dates, statistics or stylistic techniques. Pay close attention to command words: „Analysieren Sie“ requires detailed analysis, while „Inwiefern“ requires you to consider different sides before reaching a judgement.

1. What is the Edexcel IAL German exam structure for 2027?
The full Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level German qualification consists of four externally assessed units:
Unit 1 (WGN01): Spoken Expression and Response
Unit 2 (WGN02): Understanding and Written Response

9. What marks are needed for an A* in Edexcel IAL German?
To receive an A*, a student must achieve:
At least 320 out of 400 uniform marks overall, which is the minimum required for grade A; and
