Six Examiner Tips for Edexcel International GCSE Pakistan Studies
1. Explain causes and consequences instead of telling the story
Do not fill your answer with a chronological account of what happened. When a question asks you to explain, focus on why an event occurred or how it produced a particular result.
Build each paragraph as a chain:
Cause → immediate effect → wider consequence
For example, do not simply state that Pakistan’s railway infrastructure is outdated. Explain that outdated tracks can delay freight, increase transport costs and make Pakistani exports less competitive.
2. Compare several factors and give a clear final judgement
In Paper 1 Part (d), do not discuss only the factor named in the question. Examine that factor alongside at least two other relevant factors and compare their importance.
For “assess” or “evaluate” questions in Paper 2, consider different perspectives, such as:
Short-term and long-term effects
National and local impacts
Advantages and disadvantages
Successes and limitations
Finish with a reasoned conclusion stating which factor was most important or how successful something was. Support your judgement with evidence from the answer.
3. Stay within the dates and limits given in the question
Before answering, underline the dates and key restrictions in the question. Only use evidence that falls within the stated period.
You should also identify important distinctions such as:
Causes or consequences
Domestic or foreign policy
Physical or human factors
Regional or national languages
Distribution or production
Information may be historically or geographically correct, but it will not earn marks if it falls outside the question’s timeframe or focus.
4. Give the exact number of points requested
If a two-mark question asks for two examples, give exactly two accurate examples. Adding unnecessary answers can waste time and may cost marks if one of the additional responses is incorrect.
When asked to “explain one cause”, “explain one impact” or “explain one challenge”, choose one strong point and develop it fully. Do not list several unrelated ideas. A strong answer should identify the factor, explain its immediate effect and then connect it to a wider social, economic, political or environmental consequence.
5. Use resources, precise terminology and named Pakistani evidence
In Paper 2 resource questions, refer directly to the map, graph, photograph or table provided. Include relevant figures, trends, locations or visible features and explain what the evidence shows.
Strengthen longer answers with specific Pakistani examples, such as:
The Thar coalfield
The Sui gas field
Karachi, Lahore, Punjab or Balochistan
The Ehsaas Programme
The 10 Billion Tree Tsunami programme
Use accurate terminology and keep important categories separate. For example, climate, relief and soil are physical factors, while employment, roads and urban services are human factors.
6. Allocate your time according to the available marks
Do not spend too long on one-mark and two-mark questions. Answer them briefly and directly so that you have enough time for the higher-mark questions.
Avoid long introductions that merely repeat the question. Start with your first relevant point and develop it immediately. Aim to reserve at least 10 to 12 minutes for the final evaluation question so that you can present different factors, compare them and write a justified conclusion.
Edexcel International GCSE Pakistan Studies FAQs
1. What is the Edexcel International GCSE Pakistan Studies qualification code?
The qualification code is 4PA1. The two examination papers are:
Paper 1: History and Culture of Pakistan — 4PA1/01
Paper 2: The Landscape, People and Economy of Pakistan — 4PA1/02
Including “4PA1” when searching for Edexcel IGCSE Pakistan Studies past papers, mark schemes and revision resources will help you find the correct qualification.
2. What is the Edexcel IGCSE Pakistan Studies exam structure for 2027?
The qualification consists of two externally assessed examinations:
Paper 1: 1 hour 30 minutes, 75 marks and 50% of the qualification
Paper 2: 1 hour 30 minutes, 75 marks and 50% of the qualification
Both papers are taken at the end of the course. Each paper contains three sections worth 25 marks each.
3. What topics are tested in Edexcel IGCSE Pakistan Studies Paper 1?
Paper 1 focuses on the history and culture of Pakistan. Every student studies the compulsory topic:
The Emergence of Pakistan, 1927–1971
Students also study one Section B topic:
The Pre-Mughal and Mughal Period, c700–1784
British Expansion and Rule, c1783–1898
The Growth of Political Awareness and British Reform, 1883–c1927
They then study one Section C topic:
Consolidating the New Nation, 1971–2013
Pakistan’s Role in World Affairs, 1947–1999
Students should confirm their school’s selected Section B and Section C topics before revising.
4. Do students need to revise every Paper 1 optional topic?
No. Students answer the compulsory Section A question, one question from a choice of three in Section B and one question from a choice of two in Section C.
You should thoroughly revise the Section B and Section C topics taught by your school. Do not spend valuable revision time learning optional topics that are not part of your course unless your teacher has instructed you to do so.
5. What topics are tested in Edexcel IGCSE Pakistan Studies Paper 2?
Paper 2 covers three areas:
The Physical Environment
The Human Environment
Challenges for Pakistan
Topics include Pakistan’s climate, landscapes, hazards and natural resources; population, agriculture, industry, services and transport; and challenges involving globalisation, economic development, urbanisation and climate change.
Unlike Paper 1, students must answer all questions in Paper 2.
6. How is each Paper 1 question structured?
Each of the three Paper 1 questions is worth 25 marks and contains:
A 1-mark multiple-choice question
A 2-mark short-answer question
A 6-mark extended-response question
A 16-mark “how far do you agree?” question
The 16-mark question carries most of the marks. Students must therefore leave enough time to develop a balanced argument and reach a supported judgement.
7. How should students use figures and data in Paper 2?
Do not copy information from a graph, map, photograph or table without explaining it. Select accurate evidence and use it to support a geographical point.
For example, identify a pattern using figures from the resource, then explain its possible cause or consequence. Include units when quoting numerical data and compare places or periods directly where appropriate.
Always check the title, key, scale, axes, dates and units before using a resource.
8. What do the main Edexcel Pakistan Studies command words mean?
Understanding command words helps you provide the type of answer the examiner requires:
Identify, name or state: Give one precise piece of information.
Describe: Give the main characteristics or features.
Suggest: Apply your knowledge to give a supported possible explanation.
Explain: Show how or why something happens using developed reasoning.
Assess: Build a balanced argument using the provided material and relevant knowledge.
Evaluate: Consider strengths, weaknesses, alternatives or evidence before reaching a judgement.
Discuss: Examine the value of a statement using different arguments and finish with a supported conclusion.
“Assess” and “evaluate” are used only in Paper 2, while “discuss” is central to the extended history responses in Paper 1.
