Top Tips from Edexcel IGCSE Accounting Examiners

Examiners repeatedly identify the same avoidable mistakes in Edexcel International GCSE Accounting. Use these six tips when completing past papers and preparing for the 2027 examinations.

1. Use the Correct Details in Ledger Accounts

The details column should name the account containing the other half of the double entry. Avoid vague transaction descriptions such as “standing order,” “dishonoured cheque,” “cash sales” or “bad debt.”

For example, if a standing order was paid to SW Electric, the details column should show SW Electric, not “standing order.” For a dishonoured cheque, enter the name of the customer whose payment was dishonoured.

Before completing an entry, ask: Which account contains the other side of this transaction?

2. Include Complete and Accurate Dates

Dates are an essential part of ledger accounts, cash books, petty cash books and partnership accounts. Marks are frequently lost when dates are missing or entered incorrectly.

Always include the correct:

  • Year

  • Month

  • Day

  • Period-end date

  • Balance carried down date

  • Balance brought down date

When balancing an account, remember that the balance carried down belongs at the end of the accounting period, while the balance brought down appears on the first day of the following period.

3. Use Current IFRS Accounting Terminology

Use the terminology required by the specification rather than outdated accounting expressions or informal abbreviations.

For example, write:

  • Equity, rather than capital

  • Irrecoverable debts, rather than bad debts

  • Inventory, rather than stock

  • Revenue, rather than sales

  • Financial statements, rather than final accounts

  • Trade receivables, rather than debtors

  • Trade payables, rather than creditors

Write accounting terms in full unless the question or account format clearly permits an abbreviation.

4. Develop Written Answers and Give a Final Judgement

For an explain question, identifying a point is not enough. State the point and then develop it by explaining its effect, consequence or relevance to the business.

For example:

Computerised accounting improves accuracy because calculations are completed automatically, reducing the risk of human arithmetic errors.

For evaluate, discuss or advise questions, consider both advantages and disadvantages before giving a clear, reasoned conclusion. Your final judgement should respond directly to the business or decision presented in the question.

5. Show Clear Working Notes

Do not write only the final figure in a financial statement. If that figure is incorrect and no working is shown, the examiner may be unable to award method marks.

Show separate calculations for figures such as:

  • Depreciation

  • Accruals and prepayments

  • Irrecoverable debts

  • Allowances for irrecoverable debts

  • Adjusted purchases or revenue

  • Cost of sales

  • Partnership profit allocations

  • Accounting ratios

Label each working clearly so the examiner can identify how your final figure was calculated.

6. Read the Exact Requirement Before Answering

Many marks are lost because students answer a related question rather than the one actually asked. For example, they may identify source documents when asked for books of original entry, discuss liquidity when asked about working capital, or provide undeveloped bullet points when an explanation is required.

Before answering:

  1. Identify the command word, such as state, explain, calculate, discuss or evaluate.

  2. Underline the precise accounting item requested.

  3. Check whether an account, journal entry, calculation or written explanation is required.

  4. Review your answer against the original instruction before moving on.

In numerical questions, also check that transactions have been classified correctly and entered on the correct debit or credit side.

Edexcel International GCSE Accounting (4AC1) FAQs

1. What is the specification code for Edexcel International GCSE Accounting?

The specification code is 4AC1. The two examination papers are:

  • Paper 1: 4AC1/01

  • Paper 2: 4AC1/02

When downloading past papers, check these codes carefully. Older 4AC0 papers belong to the previous specification, while 4XAC1 refers to the newer modular qualification.

2. How many Edexcel IGCSE Accounting exams will I take in 2027?

Students following the linear 4AC1 qualification take two written examinations:

  • Paper 1: Introduction to Bookkeeping and Accounting

  • Paper 2: Financial Statements

Both papers must be taken in the same examination series because 4AC1 is a linear qualification.

3. How long is each Accounting examination?

Paper 1 lasts 2 hours and contains 100 marks. Paper 2 lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes and contains 50 marks.

This gives a total of 150 marks across the qualification.

4. How much is each paper worth?

Paper 1 contributes approximately 66.7% of the final qualification, while Paper 2 contributes approximately 33.3%.

Paper 1 therefore carries twice as many marks as Paper 2, but you should not neglect Paper 2. Strong preparation of financial statements can provide a large number of marks within a relatively short examination.

5. What topics are assessed in Paper 1?

Paper 1 assesses three areas:

  1. The accounting environment

  2. Introduction to bookkeeping

  3. Introduction to control processes

This includes accounting concepts, business documents, books of original entry, double-entry bookkeeping, ledgers, depreciation, irrecoverable debts, trial balances, control accounts, correction of errors and bank reconciliation statements.

6. What topics are assessed in Paper 2?

Paper 2 focuses on:

  1. The preparation of financial statements

  2. Accounting for end-of-period adjustments

Students may need to prepare, analyse or evaluate financial statements for sole traders and partnerships. Questions can also cover incomplete records, accounting ratios, depreciation, accruals, prepayments and other year-end adjustments.

Paper 2 is holistic, so it can also require knowledge and skills developed through the Paper 1 topics.

7. What is the format of Paper 1?

Paper 1 contains two sections:

  • Section A: Ten one-mark multiple-choice questions followed by three five-mark short-answer questions

  • Section B: Five multi-part questions worth 15 marks each

The questions assess both written accounting knowledge and the ability to complete calculations, ledger accounts and other accounting records.

8. Is Edexcel International GCSE Accounting tiered?

No. The linear 4AC1 qualification does not have separate Foundation and Higher papers. All students complete the same examinations, and grades from 9 to 1 are available.

9. How should I use Accounting past papers effectively?

Complete past papers under timed conditions and mark them using the official mark schemes. Do not only check your final figures. Compare your:

  • Account titles

  • Dates and details

  • Debit and credit entries

  • Balancing figures

  • Financial statement formats

  • Workings and calculations

  • Written explanations

Keep an error log showing whether each lost mark resulted from missing knowledge, an incorrect accounting entry, poor presentation, a calculation error or misreading the question.

10. Can I use 4XAC1 modular papers to prepare for the 4AC1 examination?

The modular 4XAC1 qualification has a different assessment structure, so its papers should not replace 4AC1 past papers. Some questions may still be useful for additional topic practice, but your timed mock examinations should use papers carrying the exact codes 4AC1/01 and 4AC1/02.

Always confirm your entry code with your school or examination centre before beginning your final revision. The current linear course structure can be checked in Pearson’s official Edexcel International GCSE Accounting specification.
