What Edexcel IGCSE Biology Examiners Wish Every Student Knew (Before It’s Too Late!)

Edexcel's examiners mark thousands of scripts every single session — and after seeing that many answers, patterns become impossible to ignore. These are the mistakes they tell us come up again and again, year after year, no matter how well-prepared students think they are. The good news? Every single one of them is fixable.
1. You're describing when you should be explaining
"The rate increases as temperature rises" is a description. If the question says explain, the examiner wants to know why — the actual biology behind it. One word in the question, one very different answer required.
2. You're not writing enough points
Three marks means three distinct points. It really is that straightforward. Count the marks, count your points.
3. You're listing data instead of comparing it
When a question involves a graph or table, don't just quote numbers — connect them. Words like greater than, lowest, more effective are what turn a list into an actual analysis.
4. You're not showing your working
If your final answer is wrong but your method was right, you can still pick up marks — but only if the examiner can see your working. Never just write down an answer and move on.
5. You're using vague language when precision matters
"Water concentration" and "water potential" are not the same thing to an examiner. Biology has specific vocabulary for a reason — use it, and use it correctly.
6. Your graphs are losing you easy marks
Poor scaling, unlabelled axes, missing units — these are all marks that require almost no biological knowledge to earn. A graph that uses most of the grid and has fully labelled axes with units will always score better.
7. Your experimental designs are incomplete
If you're asked to design an investigation, you need to name your independent variable (and its range), your dependent variable (and how you'll measure it), and your control variables. Miss any of these and you'll miss marks.
8. You're not giving answers in the right format
If the question asks for standard form or a ratio, that's what it needs to be. Getting the right number in the wrong format can still cost you the mark, so always double-check before moving on.
9. You're not learning the specific examples the spec names
The withdrawal reflex. The tobacco mosaic virus. These aren't random — they're in the specification because they can and do come up. If you don't know the named examples, you can't answer those questions.
10. You're writing more answers than the question asks for
If it says give two examples, give two. Adding extras doesn't earn bonus marks — it just wastes your time and risks muddying an otherwise good answer.

How Do I Know If I’m Taking Edexcel IGCSE Biology 4BI1?
The 4BI1 specification is the international qualification code for Edexcel IGCSE Biology (Separate Science), awarded by Pearson Edexcel. If you are studying IGCSE Biology as a standalone subject (not Double Award/Combined Science) under the Edexcel exam board, your course code should be 4BI1. You can confirm this by checking your exam entry details, syllabus document, or asking your school — if it says “Edexcel IGCSE Biology (4BI1)”, these are the correct past papers for you.
Is Practicing the IGCSE Biology Past Papers from 2020 to 2025 Still Relevant for Me in 2026?
Yes — and here's why. The 2026 Pearson Edexcel International GCSE (9-1) Biology (4BI1) exam hasn't changed in any significant way. The syllabus content and exam structure are the same as the 2017 specification, so past papers are just as useful as ever.
As before, you'll still sit two papers: Paper 1 (2 hours, 110 marks) covering the core topics, and Paper 2 (1 hour 15 minutes, 70 marks).
