Our "War Story" Game: An Engaging Educational Experience in GCSE History
Introduction to the "War Story" Game
Our "War Story" game is a classroom-friendly educational GCSE History board game that immerses players in the life of a World War I soldier, particularly focusing on the Western Front. The game combines chance, history-based scenarios, and interactive gameplay to educate students on the harsh realities of trench warfare and the development of wartime medicine.
Material to be Printed Out
How the Game Works
1. Board Layout
The main game board (Image 4) has numbered squares from 1 to 28.
Each square represents a scenario from the life of a soldier—ranging from combat injuries, medical treatments, and trench life to technological innovations.
Some squares have instructions (e.g., “Go back to the start,” “Move forward two squares,” etc.).
2. War Story Cards (Image 1 & 2)
Players land on squares labeled “War Story.”
They draw a War Story card, which contains a historical scenario and a point score (ranging from -5 to +4).
- Positive cards represent survival, innovation, or medical success.
- Negative cards reflect injury, disease, or death.
Cards include references to GCSE History Medicine such as:
- Shell shock, trench foot, mustard gas, blood transfusions.
- GCSE History figures like Geoffrey Keynes, Oswald Hope Robertson, and Harold Gillies.
🏁 Objective
The aim is to survive the journey through the trenches by reaching the final square while learning about the real-life medical and battlefield challenges soldiers faced.
Players with the highest total points at the end may be considered the most “fortunate” soldiers—those who survived with minimal suffering.
